Already 10,000 years ago people kept the wolf as a pet. The wolf is therefore the ancestor of all our dog breeds. Its thick fur is usually beige to brown, gradually turning into a gray back. He stands high on his legs and has a thick drooping tail. Males are up to 160 cm long with a 40-50 cm tail and weigh up to 80 kg. Females are smaller and lighter. A wolf living in the wild can live to be about 13 years old.

Wolves are social animals. They live in groups. Such a group is called a pack. Usually a pack consists of 8-10 animals, but groups of 40 or just 2 wolves also occur. A pack usually consists of an alpha pair (the main male and female) and their young. Youngsters from earlier years may stay, as long as there is enough to eat. Lone wolves from other packs are also allowed to join the group. Only the alpha male and female in the pack have young. The whole pack takes care of the boy. If something happens to the alpha male, the beta male takes his place. Last place is for the omega wolf. The omega wolf has an important task: to keep the peace in the group. The other wolves can take their irritations out on him/her. Often the omega wolf also babysits the young when the other wolves are out hunting. When the alpha male grows too old to be a good leader, he is challenged to a fight by a younger wolf. The one who wins becomes the new leader, the other usually leaves the pack. But an alpha wolf can also choose not to fight, but to give away his leadership. Then he can stay with the group. Wolves make all kinds of noises like barking, growling, howling and howling. That "howling" is the most famous sound of a wolf. Howling wolves are not sad, but that is how they communicate with each other at a distance. Also, wolves use scents to communicate with each other. They do this with their scent glands, and with urine and feces. They use it to seal off the pack's habitat, as a warning to other packs.

Wolves are carnivores (meat eaters). Because wolves usually hunt with the whole pack, they can handle much larger prey than if they were alone. They also eat hares, rabbits and pheasants, but they prefer to hunt ungulates such as roe deer, deer and mouflon in the Veluwe. Unfortunately, our tame sheep are also easy prey for them. In the past, the wolf was a common animal throughout Europe. The wolf was also common in the Netherlands until 1820. Unfortunately, their habitat has changed at the hands of humans and the wolf was heavily persecuted. After 1860, the wolf has not been seen in our country for more than 150 years. Only since 2011 have there been reports of possible wolves in the Netherlands. Now you read weekly about wolves that have settled in the Netherlands or were even born there. The wolf is back, with us too! To the joy and sorrow of many people. If people accept wolves, there could be several dozen packs living in the Netherlands.

In this Popcard you will find under a deep blue sky in the forest at full moon, a proud alpha wolf, who howls and greets the other packs. The gold colored front has a laser cut beautiful illustration of a howling wolf. We have many more animal Popcards.

Card size 30 x 15 cm, folded to 15 x 15 cm.
Including matching blank envelope, packed in cellophane bag.

Wie kent de wolf niet?
