This city boasted the most beautiful gardens, which attracted many people. Every year, when the tulips were in bloom, the sultan threw a grand feast. The tulip became very popular and symbolized power and wealth. To express this, the sultan wore the tulip on his turban. Because tulips also closely resembled the turban, the name tulip derives from the Persian word "tulipan," meaning turban. Sultan Suleyman the First presented several tulips to important guests, including the Austrian ambassador. There, they were planted in the gardens of the Austrian Emperor. In 1593, the first tulips in the Netherlands were planted in the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. Tulips were very scarce and therefore very expensive. In 1634, tulip mania truly exploded in the Netherlands. Tulips were in high demand, and their prices rose steadily. Speculation was rife, with a single tulip bulb at one point being worth the price of an Amsterdam canal house. Things couldn't go on forever, and in 1637, tulip mania ended as quickly as it had begun when the government banned the trade. Some people became very wealthy, but many speculators were left destitute.

Popcards has even more beautiful flower cards.

Card size 30 × 15 cm, folded to 15 × 15 cm.
Including matching envelope, packed in a cellophane bag.

Bloemenkaart Tulpen.
