The name violet comes from the French word “Viola” = violet, which was the color of the original violet. The violet stands for “Modesty” and “Humility” and is often seen as a sign of innocence. Bunches of violets were therefore used as gifts for newlyweds. Originally from the forests of the northern hemisphere, the violet has symbolized romantic love between women since ancient Greece. The Greek poet Sappho from the island of Lesbos often referred to garlands of violets in her fiery poetry.
