Dolphins are not fish, but mammals that live in the sea. They breathe through their blowhole at the top of their head, which is closed underwater by a powerful valve that opens for inhalation and exhalation when a dolphin surfaces. There are about 36 species of dolphins.

Scientists place dolphins directly below humans in terms of intelligence. They owe this second place to their relatively large brains compared to their bodies, and the ability to experience complex emotions and recognize themselves in a mirror. Partly because of their intelligence, dolphins are social animals, living in groups of up to dozens of individual animals. Dolphins communicate with each other by making a variety of sounds, such as clicks and whistle-like sounds. A combination of curiosity and the playful nature of the dolphin ensures that they also have frequent contact with other animal species, including humans. It is often observed that dolphins swim with boats.

Dolphins build strong social bonds with each other; they will stay with injured or sick conspecifics, even helping with breathing by bringing them to the surface when needed. Dolphins have also protected swimmers from sharks by swimming in circles to chase the swimmers or by chasing the sharks away.
